My name is Julie Larran and I’m a PhD student with Professor Dr. Sascha Hein in the Department of Education and Psychology at the Free University of Berlin, Germany.
Together, we are interested in working with school counselors across Bhutan to find out more about counselors working in Bhutanese schools. School counseling services are recognized around the world as an important actor for the protection of children’s well-being. In Bhutan, school counseling has made tremendous progress over the past decade, however, little is known about the situation of school counselors in Bhutanese schools. We hope to be able to find out more and to share this information with you.
Below is a detailed description of the research we are looking to carry out as well as information on how to participate in case you are interested.

Step1: Our on-line workshop
Step1: Our on-line workshop
We will be holding an on-line workshop on school counselor advocacy, an important component of school counseling focusing on breaking down barriers and initiating change, based on the latest research. The workshop will also be an opportunity for you to get to know us.
Participation is free and there will be the possibility of earning a certificate from the Free University of Berlin.
The workshop consists of three sessions of 90 minutes each held over five days in English.
We held the workshop in the week of the 11th of January as well as the week of the 25th of January. We were able to have a rich exchange of experiences and ideas and we really enjoyed talking to participants. If you were able to participate then thank you! We are very pleased with how both workshops turned out.
We don't have additional dates planned, however, please feel free to get in touch in case you would like us to offer the workshop again. We would be quite happy to organize more sessions!

We will be running an on-line survey which will help us to better understand Bhutanese school counselors as very little is known about this specific profession within the Kingdom of Bhutan. Should you decide to participate in our study, we will invite you to fill out an on-line survey exploring your thoughts and feelings about school counseling. Your participation would represent a significant help towards understanding school counseling in Bhutanese schools!
Participation will take about 30 minutes of your time and all answers will be kept strictly confidential. In addition, you do not need to take part in the workshop to take part in the study, as long as you have at least one year of experience in the field.
The survey is now closed. If you participated, we would like to thank you for your help! We will be in touch about the raffle and about the survey results soon.

In order to obtain more in-depth information about YOUR experiences working as a school counselor, we are currently carrying out on-line interviews between 01.08.2022 and 05.09.2022 then in-person interviews between 07.09.2022 and 24.09.2022. The interviews should last around 45 minutes, will be audio-recorded but will remain confidential and we will ask questions such as about which training you think you need and how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected your work.
The interviews have been completed. We were able to interview 28 school counselors in August and September 2022.

Our special education research team at the Free University of Berlin is dedicated to the research of social and emotional well-being, language acquisition and the development of learning. We currently run research projects across different countries focusing on the transition experiences of migrant children, early childhood education in emergency settings and school-based mental health.
